Director Tim Federer and actor Joshua Bassett answered questions from AlloCiné about their new collaboration: the musical Le Monde de Nate, which is available today at Disney +.
Რ About?
13-year-old Nate Foster dreams of appearing on Broadway. The problem is that he can not participate in the school performance. But when his parents are away for a few days, he seizes the opportunity and travels to New York with his best friend Libby to prove to the whole world that he will succeed.
A chance meeting with Aunt Heidi – whom he has not seen in years – will ruin her plans. Nate and Libby then discover that ambition often determines the size of the greatest adventure …
Nate’s World, directed by Tim Federe from his novel of the same name, starring Ruby Wood (Nate), Aria Brooks (Libby), Joshua Bassett (Anthony) and Lisa Cudrow (Heidi).
AlloCiné: How is this musical different from a high school musical?
Tim Federer: Compared to my high school music series, here the story should be in a format of about 1h30. So this is a compressed writing exercise compared to a TV series where you have the opportunity to spend more time with each character.
Joshua Bassett: Every song in the series is a continuum of the reality in which there are characters. Musical moments in Le Monde de Nate are moments of fantasy, of dreams, imagined by Nate. This is where the main difference lies. I believe that in the end it gives an even more glamorous vision, it is an explosion of dances, songs, colors. This is a really fantastic movie that will fascinate everyone.
What fascinated you about this movie?
Joshua Bassett: There is no doubt an opportunity to continue working with the team. We have such a good experience with the High School Musical series. I read the script and completely fell in love with the project. And then, I liked that this role was slightly different from what I normally play. He is not a criminal, but you can not say that Natia is with Nate. I loved the game with different and more sulfur energy and dynamics.

What is the main focus and messages of this film?
Tim Federer: This is a really huge story about a young man, Nate, who dreams of becoming a star on Broadway. It is important to understand that music is a universal language, a means of communication that works equally for everyone around the world. This film shows the importance of friendship and sharing your dreams with others as we work together to achieve them.
I think the ultimate message of the movie is to realize that even if you consider yourself an alien on your planet, you have no decision to change, it’s the planet’s decision to adapt to you. This film shows that we are all different and that in the end we always find our tribe who take you for who you are.
I have high hopes that many young people will see this film and recognize themselves in Nat and realize that there is always a place for them, somewhere, in this community that is not always gentle. We need to take care of each other like never before. We will never leave anyone and always be ready to reach out to others, even if they do not like us.
Everyone should feel love.
Joshua Bassett: This film shows the dangerous way to go when a person is different and the world around you does not accept you as you are. I think we have a large number of young people today who are asking questions about their true identities, their place in society, and this film will only help them understand who they really are and how fit they are in this society they sometimes oppose. .
Everyone should feel in love, feel accepted. But it is sometimes a dangerous exercise. You should always go ahead and look for your place in this world until you find it. I hope this film gives you young people today all the strength you need to find your way.
Did you have any challenges during this filming?
Tim Federer: Yes, working with two 14-year-old stars is not always easy. You have to force them to do their homework, just like an actor, a dancer and a singer.
What are the best and worst memories of your youth, adulthood?
Tim Federer: The best memory of my youth was when my parents, at the age of 9, brought me to see a musical by the Cats. It was through the ears of these strange personalities, disguised as cats, that I realized I had found my calling. And every time someone made fun of me for wanting to be a dancer, my worst memory ever came from age. I think we are all heroes of our own history and should not pay attention to those who try to overthrow us.

Joshua Bassett: The worst in my memories was the period of my youth when I was told to always erase my emotions, erase my sensitivity. I was told I was a boy, I could not cry, it feels awful. Terrible is what sometimes befalls our youth.
The best memory was going home to school and it always allowed me to pursue all my passions. Whatever I wanted, I could do. I remember a thrilling moment of freedom, of happiness, when I was just sitting on a tree when I was 11 years old. This is an unforgettable moment, as if my dream has no boundaries. In life you can become whatever you want, always have to catch and never miss.
After so many years in the world of dance and song, what is it all about and how has it changed?
Tim Federer: Music transforms you by nature every second. Depending on the song, you may be sad or find colors. The song should be a mirror to whoever writes it and it has a big impact on your soul. I think this film has amazing musical moments that will surprise and fill you with hope. For me it is a film that can have as much impact as my childhood musicals like Fame and Little Shop of Horrors.
When is the next season of High School Musical?
Tim Federer: We’re actually in the middle of filming Season 3, which will be on Disney + by the end of the year. This time the series is set in a summer camp. So there will be a lot of musical numbers under the stars and you will have to beware of sunburns and mosquitoes during the day (laughs)!
