Cruz-Maltino hasn’t known what it means to win the Verdão since 2015, when Nenê put on a show at Allianz Parque
Vasco’s first match with the Brasileirão after the defeat suffered by Flamengo does not have encouraging precedents from Cruz-Maltino. After all, the opponent is none other than Palmeiras, current two-time Brazilian champions, in a duel that will take place on Thursday (13), at Allianz Parque, for the eighth round.
And, to emerge victorious, the Rio team needs to break a fast that it has been experiencing against Verdão since 2015, that is, there is nine years. I am ten games during the period, with six defeats AND four draws. Vasco’s last victory was in the Brasileirão 2015, at Allianz Parque, 2-0.
Since then, Vasco doesn’t know what it means to beat Palmeiras, at home or away. There have been five away games, with three wins for Palmeiras and two draws. In RJ, the retrospective is the same.
The last time Cruz-Maltino beat his rival in the capital of Rio, in fact, was in 2012, the year in which Palmeiras ended up relegated to Série B. On that occasion they won 3-1, with a great performance from Juninho Pernambucano.
Important victory, but in vain
The triumph mentioned in 2015 dates back to the 34th round of the Brasileirão that year. At the time, Vasco was last in the standings, with 30 points, but five points less than Avaí, 16th, and with a chance to remain among the elite. Even though the odds weren’t great, the win could help Gigante da Colina realize their dream of staying after finishing last in the first round.
Palmeiras finished ninth and were the favourites. But Cruz-Maltino, led by number 10 Nenê, played a great game and surprised, winning 2-0 Rafael Silva and Nenê himself scored the goals, both in the first half.
It is worth mentioning that this marked Vasco’s first match in Palmeiras’ new stadium. But, despite their efforts, the Rio team failed to avoid relegation to the second division.
