Euro: German police expect 500 Serbian hooligans for clash against England

According to the English newspaper, the police chief of Gelsenkirchen, where the match will be played, wants to intercept the group before confusion arises.

German police believe that a group of around 500 Serbian hooligans will try to cause violence in the match between Serbia and England, for the European Championship, next Sunday (16th), in Gelsenkirchen.

The information is taken from the English newspaper “The Guardian”, published this Monday (10). According to the article, Peter Both, police chief of Gelsenkirchen, said that the challenge would be to intercept the group before the possible confrontation with the British.

Both said it will be a “challenge” to distinguish the peaceful fans from the “disruptive” ones before the ball rolls between Serbia and England.

“I think the biggest challenge for us will be to identify violent and disruptive groups in a timely manner, to separate them from peaceful and law-abiding fans. This will be our biggest challenge,” said the German city’s police chief.

More than 1,000 German police officers will be on duty on Sunday, supported by hooligan spotters and a riot unit. It is estimated, in fact, that 40,000 English fans will go to the match, to which must be added a figure that varies between 5,000 and 8,000 Serbian fans.

Also according to the article, it is a duel considered “high risk” by UEFA, after consulting the police forces of Germany, Serbia and the United Kingdom. The match will take place on Sunday evening, at 4pm (Brasilia time), at the Veltins Arena, home of Schalke 04, the 2.Bundesliga team, and is therefore valid for the first round of Group C of the European Championship.
