Nacional, Sao Paulo’s rival in the Libertadores, fires their coach

The Uruguayan club announces the dismissal of coach Álvaro Recoba

Nacional, Sao Paulo’s opponent in the round of 16 of the Libertadores, announced on Monday (10) the dismissal of coach Álvaro Recoba. The Tricolore will face the Montevideo team in just over a month, on August 14, in Uruguay.

Even after finishing in second place in the Torneo Apertura of the Uruguayan Championship, Nacional chose to fire the coach.

However, at the end of May, the team lost 2-1 against Libertad in the last round of Group H of the Libertadores. This defeat compromised the club’s goal of winning, according to the Conmebol rankings, a place in the new FIFA Club World Cup in 2025.

Finally, the coach’s resignation came after the 3-0 defeat against Cerro last Sunday in the first round of the Intermediate Tournament of the Uruguayan Championship. Nacional has not yet announced Recoba’s replacement.
