MEC suspends the implementation of distance learning courses until 2025; understand

The Ministry specifies that the decision aims to guarantee a qualified and planned expansion of the modality

The Ministry of Education (MEC) has suspended the creation of new distance learning degree courses (EaD) until March 2025. The provision, made official with ordinance no. 528, published in the Official Journal of the Union on 6 June and signed by Minister Camilo Santana, also prohibits the offering of vacant positions and the opening of new distance learning centers by institutions of the Federal Education System. According to the MEC, the decision aims to ensure a qualified and planned expansion of the modality, with the aim of offering programs of excellence.

Now the MEC, in collaboration with experts and educational bodies, will have until 31 December this year to develop new quality standards for distance learning courses, as well as establish a new regulatory framework for their provision.

The ordinance also establishes transitional procedures for the regulatory processes of higher education institutions and distance learning university courses. While some processes will continue to follow the regular flow, with evaluations conducted by the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (Inep), others will be suspended until the new regulatory standards for distance higher education are defined.

The federal government will also allocate R$5.5 billion for the consolidation and expansion of federal universities and teaching hospitals. The resources, coming from the new Growth Acceleration Program (New CAP), will finance the creation of ten new university campuses in different regions of the country, as well as improving the infrastructure of existing educational and healthcare institutions.
