We know the dedication of certain actors and actresses to their profession and the sometimes disturbing and heavy degree of investment they make in their art. Robert De Niro and his 30kg gained to better portray Jack LaMotta’s physical decline in Raging Bull. Christian Bale, who starved himself for three months and regularly deprived himself of sleep for The Machinist, for which he lost 28 kilos. before nearly doubling his weight during the filming of Batman Begins.
For the purposes of Man on the Moon, Jim Carrey also slipped into the skin and clothes of his model Andy Kaufman. A plunge that will take on disturbing proportions, as shown in the fantastic documentary Jim & Andy. And then, on the side, there’s this very significant weight gain by the actor, for the purposes of the movie… which he ended up never making. read it right
Controversial movie? You must have forgotten, or have seen it before: Les Trois Corniauds. Released in 2012, it was directed by the Farrell brothers. It was a film adaptation of the adventures of the comedy group Les Trois Corniauds, which originally consisted of Curly Howard, Moe Howard and Larry Fine. The original trio was also the subject of several films.
This 2012 version stars Chris Diamantopoulos, Sean Hayes, and Will Sasso, who reprise the roles played by Moe Howard, Larry Fine, and Curly Howard, respectively. Apparently, assigning roles was a headache.
20 kg weight gain… for nothing
When the Farrell brothers took charge of the project, their choice was the most surprising. They were actually thinking of giving Benicio del Toro the role of Moe. Larry Sean Penn (who isn’t exactly known for his comedic roles, except in his early youth…). and Curly Jim Carrey.
The latter decided Gain 20 kg to better embody his original model, who was very overweight. But it seems that the issue was completely dropped along the way without giving the filmmakers an exact reason. “He didn’t tell you any more news” said Peter Farrelly with the Los Angeles Times.
When a reporter asked the filmmaker if the actor had taken care to inform him of his decision to drop out and eventually turn down the role, Farrelly replied: “It would be good!” Moon Jim…
“Somebody’s gonna lose an eye.”
In an interview with MTVJim Carrey explains that he gave up the role… due to health reasons. “I really don’t want to do anything half-assed. And I don’t think wearing prosthetics is convincing.”. In addition to the 20 kg he gained, he actually estimated that he needed to gain another twenty in order to properly play Curly Howard. Therefore, 40 kg is really a lot.
“When you’re Robert De Niro in your 20s or early 30s, you can get over it. It’s another thing to get over it when you’re already in your 30s. Your body can’t handle it, or you have seizures. Heart.”
And Kerry drives the point home: “If you add to that Sean Penn and Benicio del Toro getting kicked in the head all day, somebody’s going to lose an eye. It’s not going to be good.” And yet, in the end, none of the three actors originally wanted by Farrell would join the adventure. Perhaps it was for the best considering the outcome…
