Will we soon have a new installment of the Cornetto saga?
Almost 20 years after the premiere of ‘Shaun of the Dead’, translated in Spain with the incomprehensible and disastrous title ‘Zombies Party’fans continue to ask for a sequel that brings back the iconic characters created by Simon Pegg and Edgar Wrightand that maybe it will become one of those horror sequels that are (almost) better than the first.
However, the writers of the original, who also acted as director (Wright) and protagonist (Pegg), have never been very optimistic about a sequel… Although they don’t rule it out 100% either..
In an interview with Sono HouseSimon Pegg commented “It baffles me how there could be a ‘Shaun Of The Dead 2’, because most of the main characters are dead. One of them is a zombie, in a shed… which would be a bit boring.”
An opinion on which we do not agree, since Nick Frost’s zombie character and Simon Pegg’s Shaun would give for a buddy-movie quite curiousas evidenced by the last shot of the film, one of the best post-credit scenes in history.
‘Shaun of the Dead 2’ will probably never happen, but Pegg recalls writing a draft script for a vampire sequel: “I jokingly wrote a treatment for ‘From Dusk Till Shaun’, which was a sequel to ‘Shaun of the Dead,’” said Pegg. It was about Shaun and Ed having to go to Edinburgh or something. I don’t know. It was ridiculous. And it was a joke. It wasn’t like a serious attempt. Edgar thought it would be fun to do the movie again, but with vampires.. But it was all just pub talk.”
At least we had a nod to the fans in the pandemic with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost at home remembering ‘Zombies Party’.
The truth is that Edgar Wright is not very keen on returning to the Cornetto saga either., or at least not with ‘Shaun of the Dead 2’. “I haven’t gone back to horror comedy, because with ‘Shaun Of The Dead’ I felt like I had said a lot of what I wanted to say already. It’s hard to go back to that, even as a producer. Sometimes they send me scripts, people want to do the next movie and they want me to come on board as a producer.. But I find it difficult to cover the same territory again.”
Edgar Wright, who recently reviewed his 100 favorite horror movies, continued: “ The thing is that movies take a long time to make. I think that’s what the fans don’t quite get sometimes. They’ll say, ‘Why don’t you do a Shaun sequel?’ It’s like, these movies take three years to make, you have to really love them to make them. So because movies take a long time, trying to challenge yourself with a different topic or something you haven’t done before is always the real motivation.”
