Despite finishing second in the Champions League, Borussia Dortmund will not have Edin Terzic on the sidelines next season. Moreover, the coach asked to leave the club and had his contract terminated, which will expire in 2025. The professional’s departure comes two days after the “Sky Sports” channel reported that defender Hummels will renew his contract only if the 41-year-old coach had left the club.
Shortly after the final of the most important competition in European football, at Wembley, the coach began talks with the Aurinegra management and, since then, he has expressed his desire to leave.
“It’s incredibly painful to say this to the Aurinegro fans, but today I break with Borussia Dortmund. It was an honor to win the German Cup and lead this fantastic club to the Champions League final. After ten years at Borussia, I feel that the new era of the club must start with a new man on the bench,” said Terzic.

The coach, who won the DFB Cup with BVB in 2021, finished second in the 2023 championship and reached the Champions League final in 2024, has asked BVB to terminate his contract with immediate effect.

Frayed relationship with one of the leaders
Also according to the British portal, Hummels and Terzic do not have a good relationship in everyday life. In this sense, the 35-year-old defender, whose contract expires at the end of June, has expressed his desire for the coach to leave. It is worth remembering that the player was one of the spearheads of the Champions League, present in this edition’s selection and is in the sights of clubs from the United States and Saudi Arabia.
The coach began his career as a member of Borussia Dortmund’s scout team in 2010, and spent time in the technical committees of the Aurinegra base. In 2018 he returned to the club, following spells at Besiktas and West Ham as assistant to Slaven Bilic.
Two years later, after the dismissal of Lucien Favre, he took over as coach and managed to lead the team to the German Cup title in 2021. From mid-2022 he returned to coach Borussia Dortmund. He lost the 2022/23 Bundesliga title in the last round, seeing Bayern Munich lift the trophy, and finished the cycle with Champions League runners-up in 2023/24.
