Hezbollah claims to have attacked 9 Israeli military installations with rockets and drones

Hezbollah said it fired rockets and armed drones at nine Israeli military installations on Thursday in a coordinated attack, escalating hostilities on Lebanon’s southern border for the second straight day.

The attacks were carried out in retaliation for an Israeli strike on Tuesday that killed a senior Hezbollah field commander. A security source said it was the biggest attack by Hezbollah since October, when the group engaged in a firefight with Israel on the sidelines of the Gaza war.

Hezbollah said in a statement that it had fired a barrage of Katyusha and Falaq rockets against six Israeli military positions. Al-Manar television reported that more than 100 rockets were fired at once.

Hezbollah’s statement said it also launched attack drones against the headquarters of Israel’s Northern Command, an intelligence headquarters and a military barracks.

A security source told Reuters this involved the launch of at least 30 attack drones at once, making it the group’s largest drone attack so far in the eight months of war.

Iran-backed Hezbollah and Israel have exchanged fire almost daily since the start of the Gaza war in October, but the last two days have seen a sharp increase following the Israeli attack that killed the commander of Hezbollah.

Hezbollah said on Wednesday it had carried out at least eight attacks that day in retaliation.

Air raid sirens sounded in northern Israeli cities on Thursday and Israeli authorities said around 40 rockets were fired from Lebanon in the afternoon.

State broadcaster Kan showed images of several rocket intercepts in mid-air over Israeli cities, including Safed, about 12 km from the border.

Two people were injured by shrapnel, Israel’s national ambulance service said.
