The old question repeats itself: is it better to compare a new mid-range Android or an old iPhone? If so, which one should you buy? Galaxy S23 FE or iPhone 12?
An age-old question: is it better to buy a recent mid-range Android or an old iPhone? In this story, the Galaxy S23 FE and iPhone 12 are the stars of the moment for several reasons. One is the best value for money SAMSUNG currently and the other has made a comeback after the Apple announces that it will receive iOS 18 full of AI news. But what is the best purchasing option today? S23 FE or iPhone 12?

Old top of the range x recent premium mid-range
First let’s compare a top-of-the-line smartphone from 2020 with a premium mid-range smartphone from 2023, so performance and usability should be very similar: the simplest chips have improved, while the advanced ones are reaching the end of their life.
The difference in everyday life is in other departments, such as photography, where the Galaxy S23 FE is better. Not that it is much superior, but it is more versatile, given that it has three rear sensors. The iPhone 12, however, continues to dominate on social media, and could perhaps be the main reason why people still opt for older iPhones.

Furthermore, compared to the latest iPhones and Android smartphones, the 12 model loses many features and technologies, such as the 120 Hz screen and artificial intelligence solutions, becoming truly obsolete for a mobile phone that costs R$3,600 after 4 years of life.

Is a software update important?

The iPhone 12 has made a comeback after the launch of operating system iOS 18, which will reach the device. Furthermore, the promise is that it will receive iOS 19, thus completing its update cycle. In other words, it should receive most of the interface customization features.
This is why people are still looking for smartphones: in the hope of spending “less” on an iPhone to use for another two, three years, until it stops receiving updates.
Even so, I don’t think it’s worth buying a 2020 iPhone with upgrades in mind first. It’s not that it’s a cheap model – it costs around R$3,500 in the most basic version – in the same range as many recent Android phones that will have more support and be better overall.
The example is the Galaxy S23 FE, which just received One UI 6.1 with practically all the Galaxy AI features — launched with the Galaxy S24 —, and will still have to be updated up to Android 17, or three years of life. And it costs a lot less.
The iPhone 12 x Galaxy S23 FE: which two to buy?
The Galaxy S23 FE is worth more than the iPhone 12. It is cheaper and has a more interesting set than its rival, which is already approaching retirement. The Samsung mobile is better in terms of screen, cameras and performance, as well as having longer update times.
