If you have noticed the small details, you will have noticed that the butterfly is the symbol of Penelope Featherington, since she has used accessories in the shape of this little animal. In this third season, her presence is even more intense, since in addition to her clothes, she is also in the decoration of her house and in an important celebration.
In the eighth chapter, titled “Into the Light”, in addition to seeing Cressida blackmail Penelope into giving her money in exchange for not revealing her secret about her dual identity, the protagonist’s sisters are also shown smitten with her organizing a dance.

Penelope Featherington transforms from caterpillar to butterfly
This, in addition to being a beautiful sight, has an important and deep meaning, since butterflies are a symbol of freedom and transformation. In popular culture, these insects are often associated with personal growth, and in the context of the story, they represent Penelope’s liberation from her past, her evolution, her empowerment, and her ability to find happiness with Colin.
In the first two seasons of the show, Penelope was like a caterpillar: fragile, shy and lacking in confidence. However, in the third season, this changes. Penelope transforms into a butterfly, emerging from its chrysalis and showing its true glory.
This symbolism is reinforced when Penelope wears butterfly earrings while her mother tells her, “It gives me comfort to know you’ll always be here to take care of me.” Immediately after this scene, she takes charge of her life, decides to get married and leave the Featherington house, and her wardrobe changes completely, going from using bright colors to more sober and elegant tones. So the butterflies end up being the perfect symbol that reflects their evolution within the program.
