‘Dancing for the Devil’: Is the story of the 7M cult true and what does it have to do with TikTok?

The recently released Netflix documentaries, “Dancing for the Devil: The 7M Cult,” have captured the public’s attention and have sparked widespread debate about its authenticity and the background of the story it presents. Upon its arrival on the platform, several questions arose: Is this series based on a true story? What is true of the facts he mentions?

What is the plot of ‘Dancing for the Devil: The 7M Sect’?

The narrative is presented as a work of non-fiction, using interviews, archival footage and dramatized re-enactments to tell its story. The series follows sisters Miranda and Melanie Wilking, who became popular on TikTok thanks to their excellent dancing skills and seemed to have a promising future together. However, that changed when Miranda collaborated with dancer James “BDash” Derrick.

Their footage together went viral and a short time later they began a romantic relationship and ended up getting married. The funny thing is that Isaiah Shinn, James’ videographer, introduced the couple to a religious group called Shekinah Church, founded decades ago by Isaiah’s father, Robert Shinn.

Robert is also described as the head of 7M Films, a talent agency specializing in viral TikTok dancers, where he is rumored to control its members, including James and Miranda.

Although the sisters got along very well, shortly after her religious conversion, Miranda began to avoid everyone to the point of not seeing them. For this reason, her sister Melanie, together with her parents, in 2022 did a live on Instagram ensuring that the Derricks belonged to a sect created by the church and 7M, since they could not have contact with her, since she had blocked them from social networks and they kept her idle.

‘Dancing for the Devil: The 7M Cult’ examines an alleged religious cult and the case of Miranda Derrick

Although the case was relevant in the United States at the time, Netflix decided to make the documentary series, where other families, former 7M dancers and former members of the Shekinah Church accused the church and Robert Shinn of exerting illegal control over them, making them live in private properties and even taking away most of their TikTok earnings to hand over to Robert Shinn.

Devastated, Melanie stated in the footage that when her grandfather died in 2020, her sister did not attend the funeral because 7M did not allow her to attend, which has raised alarm for the church, its founder and the alleged agency.

Miranda, who was not involved in ‘Dancing for the Devil: The 7M Sect’, assured that she has never been held against her will, is not a hostage and really enjoys working at 7M Films. However, if at any time you do not want to be associated with it, you can change your decision, since no one is forcing you to stay there.

On June 4, the young woman said she was scared after the premiere of the documentary, as she has been harassed and received threats on her life. In a statement, it said Netflix’s material is “one-sided.”

“I love my mum, dad and Melanie and she will always be a part of my life. The truth is that right now we don’t agree. “I think this documentary is a one-sided story,” he said, adding: “I gave my life to Jesus Christ in 2020 and asked my family for space from the beginning to gather my thoughts and process my new path that I wanted. to take with God”.

At this time, the charges against Robert Shinn, the Shekinah Church and the delegation have not progressed legally because there is not enough evidence to support the allegations made about the existence of the sect and its influence.
