Assassin’s Creed Shadows Producer Names Elon Musk as One of Those Responsible for Attacks on the Game, Explains Why the Company Failed to Respond
One of the managers of the franchise Assassin’s Creed points Elon Musk as one of those responsible for the hatred he feels Assassin’s Creed Shadows received months before its release. According to series producer and executive vice president Marc-Alexis Côté, the billionaire helped fuel the attacks due to the inclusion of Yasuke, the black samurai, as one of the game’s protagonists.

Côté’s speech to the Game File website refers to a publication Musk made in May 2024. Shortly after the game’s announcement, the owner of Twitter) made a post related to the game in which he claimed that diversity and inclusion were killing art, as if the existence of a black samurai was not historical truth, but progressive fiction.

According to the producer, the billionaire’s position fueled the hatred that some players began to feel for the title. And, within the studio, the reaction was immediate, with the entire team outraged by the situation.
So much so that Côté himself said he had to refrain from responding to Elon Musk. “That tweet aroused emotions that… The first thing I wanted to do was go back to X after deleting it and respond,” says the producer, who also reveals why he decided to abstain from the discussion.

“Attacking someone like Elon isn’t going to convince people of our team’s point of view,” the executive says. He says that despite his desire to counter the attacks, he stopped to analyze the consequences that this response would bring.
For Côté, the choice of Yasuke as the protagonist Assassin’s Creed Shadows it was quite natural and even obvious. He says that the historical figure of the black samurai continually appeared as the team researched the period and that this fit the theme of the series. “We have a super mysterious historical character that we don’t know much about. That’s what we wanted in the game.”
The producer says he was very annoyed by Elon Musk’s speech because nothing the billionaire said corresponds to what the team is doing and causes other people to think the same way. “People have to play for themselves. And if in the first 11 minutes and 47 seconds they’re not convinced about what we’re doing, then we can talk,” he says.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows arrives on PS5, Xbox Series and PC on November 15th and will be set in Japan during the Sengoku period, at the end of the 16th century. It is in this historical context that the game will present the figure of Yasuke, a former slave who ends up falling into the good graces of the daimyo Oda Nobunaga and becomes one of his most important samurai. And although there are some gaps in his story, there are several documents that attest to his existence and importance in that period.
Besides Yasuke, the new one Assassin’s Creed will have a second protagonist, this time completely imaginary. Naoe will be a ninja and will use this starting point to explore the stealth elements so common to the series.
