The 10 best shark movies

Killer animal films have fascinated and terrified audiences for decades. However, within this horror and suspense subgenre, there is one of these animals that attracts the public’s attention the most: the shark.

Since Steven Spielberg’s classic “Jaws,” these predators of the sea have starred in several films as big baddies, attacking secretly and leaving traces of blood in the waters.

Inspired by this, we decided to list the 10 best shark movies.

The French production “Under the Waters of the Seine” follows a shark that threatens Paris on the eve of a world triathlon championship.

In the plot, a brilliant marine biologist (Bérénice Bejo) discovers, together with a young environmental activist (Léa Léviant), that a huge shark is swimming in the depths of the Seine.

Based on true events, “Danger on the High Seas” is an Australian horror and survival film.

The plot follows a group of friends who get into trouble when their boat sinks and a great white shark threatens them. The film won a spiritual following in 2022.

One of cinema’s most influential and successful films, “Jaws” was the prototype of what we know as a blockbuster. The film was directed by Steven Spielberg and won three sequels.

In the plot, a great white shark terrorizes a small beach resort town. A police chief (Roy Scheider) teams up with a marine biologist (Richard Dreyfuss) and a shark hunter (Robert Shaw) to hunt the creature.

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (“House of Wax”), “Shallow Waters” is a survival thriller starring Blake Lively (“Gossip Girl”).

The plot follows a young medical student (Lively) who goes surfing alone on a secluded beach. However, she is attacked by a great white shark and, wounded, swims towards a rock in the middle of the sea. Now, just a few meters from the beach, she struggles to survive the shark and get out of the water.

Combining elements of horror and science fiction, “From the Bottom of the Sea” is directed by Renny Harlin (“A Nightmare on Elm Street,” “Die Hard 2,” “Total Risk”). The cast includes Saffron Burrows, Thomas Jane, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Rapaport and rapper LL Cool J.

Starring Jason Statham, “Megatubarão” is a hugely commercially successful science fiction action film. Directed by Jon Turteltaub (“The Legend of the Lost,” “While You Were Sleeping”), the film is based on a novel by Steve Alten. It had a sequel in 2023.

In the plot, a submarine becomes trapped in the depths of the ocean after being attacked by a gigantic prehistoric shark believed to be extinct, the megalodon. A diver specializing in deep-sea rescues (Statham) is recruited for the rescue.

In the horror and survival film “Deep Fear,” two sisters on vacation in Mexico decide to go cage diving to watch sharks. However, a technical problem causes the cage to detach and fall to the ocean floor, leaving the sisters trapped 47 meters below the surface and surrounded by sharks.

Directed by Johannes Roberts (“Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City”) and starring actor Matthew Modine, the film was a commercial success and received a sequel in 2019.

The survival thriller “Mar Aberto” is based on true events. The plot follows a couple who decide to go diving during their holidays.

However, due to a mistake on the part of the boat’s crew, they are left in the middle of the ocean, full of sharks.

Directed by Enzo G. Castellari (“The Bronx Warriors,” “Keoma”), “Jaws” is an Italian horror film that was successful at the US box office. However, the film ended up being blocked in North American theaters after its directors were accused of plagiarizing “Jaws.”

In the plot, a writer (James Franciscus) and a shark hunter (Vic Morrow) try to save swimmers in a coastal resort after a great white shark begins attacking tourists.

In the horror/thriller “Jaws: Sea of ​​​​​​Blood”, a group of young friends, after a night out, steal two jet skis to take a ride around the sea.

However, they have an accident and end up stranded in the middle of the ocean. Additionally, traces of blood attract hungry sharks.
