Other medicines developed to treat diabetes but used for weight loss have also piqued the interest of Brazilians
Summary
In April of this year alone, the term “Ozempic” was searched for 1.5 million times, which is a 307.6% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
In recent years, Ozempic, a Novo Nordisk drug originally developed to treat type 2 diabetes, has become a real rage among people trying to lose weight. According to a study by the DrFirst platform, prescriptions of the drug increased by 150% between December 2022 and June 2023, highlighting the growing demand as a weight loss tool. And, according to new research published by Semrusha digital marketing platform specializing in online visibility, Brazilians’ interest in drugs continues to increase in 2024.
In April this year alone, the term “Ozempic” was searched for 1.5 million times, an increase of 307.6% compared to the same period in 2023. Furthermore, “Ozempic price” had 246 thousand searches , recording an increase of 1,259.1%.
But medicine is not the only one in the segment to attract the attention of the national population. Mounjaro, from the Eli Lilly and Company laboratory, had an absurd growth in searches of 351,328.6%, going from 70 searches in April 2023 to 246 thousand in the same month of 2024. Another name that attracted attention was Wegovy , also from Nova Nordisk, which went from 1.3 thousand searches to 74 thousand (+5,592.3%).
“It is important to note that the increase in online searches for these drugs does not necessarily mean that doctors are writing more prescriptions. With the popularity of this new formula, many people end up searching on their own. Therefore, it is important to always look for true information and content of quality to make better decisions with better information,” explains Erich Casagrande, marketing leader of Semrush in Brazil.
In the study, the company also monitored Brazilians’ interest in specific drugs for weight loss or other functions, in addition to formulas considered natural. Sibutramine, indicated for the treatment of obesity in adults with a BMI greater than 30 kg/m², had 301 thousand searches in April this year (+82.4%); Bupropion, a drug used mainly to treat depression and smoking, had 246 thousand searches (+49.1%); Spirulina, a food supplement obtained from cyanobacteria, had 110 thousand searches (21.5%).
Other terms related to weight loss are also increasing: “diet for weight loss”, which had 90.5 thousand searches in April 2024 (+22.3%) and “tea for weight loss”, with 74 thousand searches (+22.3% ). Despite not having had an increase in searches, “healthy eating” has had 110 thousand searches in the last month.
Casagrande concludes: “From these numbers we were able to analyze that the interest in Ozempic, for example, was 1,263.64% greater than the search for a healthy diet. This trend indicates that many people prefer quick solutions instead of investing in habits healthy food”. that provide lasting benefits. It is essential to promote information on the importance of a balanced and sustainable approach to health and well-being.”
