Netflix’s latest French production by Xavier Gens, released on the platform on June 5, is already being talked about… but not for the reasons you might imagine!
Let’s put ourselves in context: the film tells the story of a brilliant scientist Sophia (Béréniere Bejo) who is warned by Mika (Lea Levian), a young environmental activist, about the presence of a large shark in the depths of the Seine. The World Triathlon Championship will be held for the first time in Paris in the summer of 2024. The two women are then left with no choice but to team up with Adil (Nassim Lies), the head of the river police, to prevent bloodshed in the heart of the French capital.
However, when Mika reveals his horrifying discovery to Sofia, there is a big mistake on the screen: 17 minutes and 10 seconds into the film, we see a map that outlines the route of the Pacific shark and India to Paris. Through the Cape of Good Hope and the Atlantic Ocean, from the shores of Europe to Le Havre, up the Seine. At least that’s what one of the heroes claims, but the map we see shows a shark…in the Loire!
“Netflix movie Sous la Seine synopsis: This is the story of a giant shark that arrives in Paris via the Loire.,” reads a post on X (formerly Twitter) by doctor and blogger Dominique Dupan, who discovered the bug.

This mistake is now making fun of the internet and the city of Orléans, which is crossed by the Loire, also decided to get involved on the X of its official account:
Don’t worry if you see a big fin on the Loire, it’s a shark #Under the roof who was returning to Paris for filming 🦈. We can prove it 😉 https://t.co/QH0pIXcfpC

As HuffPost points out, in addition to this mistake, the film also drew attention for not being completely faithful to the reality of the mako shark in Paris, even though it’s a species that can be found quite offshore.
In addition, the mako shark generally attacks isolated prey, contrary to what is presented in the feature film: “We are in total delirium, in the most total fiction“- shark veterinarian Eric Klua reminded the publication earlier.
In any case, swimming should be avoided, in the Seine or the Loire, you never know…
Sous la Seine, hosted by Berenice Bejo, Nassim Lies and Lea Levian, is available to stream on Netflix.
