What if the scent of adventure wafted into your living room this weekend? If that’s your thing, then head over to Arte, who have a nice idea to broadcast the excellent Bounty directed by Mel Gibson. Let’s get the joke out of the way that immediately comes to mind: we’re not talking about a chocolate bar filled with coconut, but about a movie featuring a famous Royal Navy frigate.

very good entertainment Bounty There is a big screen adaptation Captain Bligh and Mr. ChristianRichard Howe’s novel, based on the true story of William Bly, the lieutenant against whom the mutiny began in 1787. It is the fourth film to evoke this historical episode, after A Bounty with Errol Flynn (1933), Rebels on the Bounty with Clark Gable (1935) and (again) Rebels on the Bounty with Marlon Brando (1962).

Bounty It takes viewers back to December 1787, when the eponymous Royal Navy frigate is heading from England to Tahiti. While the first part of the voyage is uneventful, relations between Captain Bligh (Anthony Hopkins) and the crew are strained after several failed attempts to cross Cape Horn. The sailors are slowly losing the iron discipline that their commander imposed upon them after spending a few months in paradise. A mutiny erupts, led by Second Captain Fletcher Christian (Mel Gibson)…

Filming in French Polynesia and the parterre of the stars (or rather “the parterre”).

presented in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, Bounty It’s a great show that shines Mel Gibson As the King of the Seas (Mel Gibson, who you probably don’t know from this movie where he’s cryogenically frozen), Jack Sparrow years earlier in the Pirates of the Caribbean saga. The exotic adventure was shot specifically in French Polynesia, where the quality of the sets and costumes are emphasized.

A sublime score by Vangelis (Chariots of Fire, 1492, Blade Runner) This film, classically but firmly staged, places great importance on the psychology of the characters. which are embodied in an incredible number of stars: Mel Gibson and Anthony Hopkins, starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Liam Neeson and Laurence Olivier! Makes you want to go on a cruise with them, doesn’t it?

Tonight on Arte at 9 o’clock.
