It’s official, the Power Rangers series will not see the light of day on Netflix. Jinsakuu (via TV Line ) reports that the show no longer has a place on the streaming giant and that franchise owner Hasbro Entertainment will explore “A new creative direction for the series with a new partner.“
However, the project has already found its showrunner in the person of Jenny Klein (Daisy Jones And The Six, Supernatural), who was supposed to work with the head of the franchise, Jonathan Entwistle (The End Of The F***ing). world).
The first series of Power Rangers debuted in 1993, spawning several films and other series, the television franchise has seen around twenty variations. To recall, the original series tells the story of Jason, Zack, Billy, Trinh and Kimberly, five teenagers who are hired overnight by Zordon to become some kind of superhero (or super-warrior) in costumes. Together they must face Rita Repulsa, a terrifying space sorceress. Since the first series of these 3 seasons, the franchise has never aired again.
In total, 24 seasons followed, divided into 20 consecutive series, all resulting in over 800 episodes. Last year, the TV movie Power Rangers: Still Moving Forward was released on Netflix to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the original series (1993-1995) and the Power Rangers franchise itself.
When plans for a new live-action series began, it was seen as the start of a potential new franchise. Michael Lombardo, President of Global Television at eOne, said at the time:We really offered a global approach. It’s not just a soap opera; These are series followed by movies and certain children’s shows.“
Therefore, we expected Power Rangers to start from scratch and not rely on Dean Israelite’s 2017 reboot with Dacre Montgomery (Stranger Things) or Naomi Scott (Aladdin), which delighted critics but failed at the box office. This will not happen. At least not on Netflix…
While I wait to see who takes over the project, Power Rangers: Always Towards Future can be (re)discovered streaming on Netflix.
