It was June 16 when the first episode of the second season of “House of the Dragon” premiered. Although it was generally liked by the audience, there was one scene in particular that had significant changes compared to what is read in George RR Martin’s texts.
There will be spoilers below, so read at your own risk.
Aegon II’s son is killed in his first chapter
“House of the Dragon 2”
In the episode titled “A Son for a Son”, Rhaenyra is seen crying over the death of Lucerys Velaryon and making an important decision: to assassinate Aemond Targaryen, the person responsible for this crime.
Daemon gets a job and arrives in King’s Landing to recruit Blood, a member of the Gold Cloaks who despises Hightower, and Cheese, a rat who knows the Red Keep well and knows how to infiltrate it. Together they will undertake the task of taking Emond’s life.
Once they infiltrate, they find Helaena Targaryen and her two children, the twins Jaehaera and Jaehaerys. To fulfill the order to kill a son, they decide to exterminate Aegon’s male heir. However, because they are identical, they doubt who it is, so they ask Helaena to point it out, which she does when threatened with a knife.
The duo then kill Prince Jaehaerys and behead him. This gives Helaena time to grab her daughter and leave the room, heading to the room of her mother, Alicent, who is surprisingly having sex with Ser Criston. However, in the book ‘Blood and Fire’, on which the series is based, things are very different.
The book “Blood and Fire” describes his death
Jaehaerys Targaryen as a manifestation
more traumatic
According to the text, Blood and Cheese manage to get into Alicent Hightower’s room in the middle of the night, who was alone at the time. While bound and gagged, Helaena arrives with her three children, Jaehaerys, Jaehaera, and Maelor, whom they manage to contain.
The criminals then ask Helaena to choose which of her children will be killed. Although she begs to be killed, she fails in the attempt, so she ends up choosing Maelor, her youngest son. However, Blood kills Jaehaerys, leaving his mother completely devastated.
These differences have caused social media users to start a debate about the story the “House of the Dragon” series presents and how it changes from the original book.
