Warning spoilers! This article reviews the plot of the film Sous la Seine, and in particular its ending. If you haven’t seen it and don’t want to know what it contains, read no further.
You’ve watched Sous la Seine, Xavier Gens’ hit on Netflix, and with that apocalyptic ending, you tell yourself there’s room for a sequel. You are absolutely right.
Indeed, at the end of the feature film, Paris is besieged by killer sharks after all of the city’s bridges are blown up, and then the Seine invades the city’s streets.
As expected, it was an instant hit. And not only in France. According to the platform, more than 40 million subscribers have seen the film worldwide in just five days. Even Stephen King, always quick to give his opinion on everything he sees, praised Xavier’s film Gens – which is not the case with French Netflix subscribers.
Underneath Sena 2?
With a veritable tidal wave in global ratings for Netflix films, director Xavier Gens has teased a possible Sous la Seine 2, indicating that talks could soon begin for a sequel. This is what he told her variety :
We are not talking about it at the moment, but it is possible that we will discuss it soon. If there is a sequel, it will take place in a fully submerged Paris.
The end of the film leaves the two main characters, Sofia and Adil (Berenis Bejo and Nasim Lieu) in an awkward situation, placed on a small overturned boat in the middle of the Seine and sharks.
It will be recalled that explosives released to kill sharks mainly caused shells to sink into the river after the Second World War, causing the flooding of Paris. Xavier Gens hints that things will only get worse in a possible sequel, as the city is completely underwater and no doubt overrun by sharks.
Full of possibilities
But Paris isn’t the only city potentially threatened by mutant, eco-friendly, vengeful, man-eating sharks. As the end credits predict, the Shark Queen Lilith and her progeny are unleashed from the city in an apocalyptic ending and spread across the globe, attacking London, the United States, Asia, in short the entire world.
This ending not only sets the scene for a potential sequel, but the entire killer shark franchise around planet Earth. When will it be under the Thames or under the Tiber?!
