The third season of ‘Brigerton’ has left fans with their hearts in their hands. Unexpected twists and revelations kept audiences on the edge of their seats, and the series finale was no exception. Below, we explain its ending and the differences from the book.
Warning: This note contains spoilers for “Brigerton 3” and Julia Quinn’s books.
‘Brigerton 3’: What the series changed in its finale compared to the books
In chapter eight of the series, we saw Colin and Penelope forming their own family by having a baby, Francesca married to John Stirling and Eloise traveling to Scotland, but in Julia Quinn’s proposed story different things happen.
The discovery of Lady Whistledown and her continuation as a writer
In “Bridgerton 3”, Penelope is revealed to society as the gossip writer Lady Whistledown thanks to the queen, who reveals her identity in the middle of a ball. After a short speech, the young woman manages to convince the queen to continue writing, and it is implied that she will continue to put her ideas to paper. However, in the book “Seducing Mr. Bridgerton”, the one who announces Penelope’s dual identity to high society is Colin himself, after being blackmailed by Cressida.
In the novel, Penelope decides to stop writing as Lady Whistledown and becomes the editor of her husband’s diaries, which is not mentioned as much in the series.
Eloise Bridgerton escapes in the fourth book
Young Bridgerton had major changes that could change his story. In the third season, she still has no love interests, so she decides to live with her sister Francesca and her husband, John Stirling, in Scotland for a while. In the final episode, she is seen leaving in a carriage, saying goodbye to all her family members. However, in the book “Seducing Mr. Bridgerton,” Eloise runs to meet Mr. Phillip, the man she falls in love with after communicating through letters, which adds more drama to her story.
Cressida is not leaving London
All indications are that Cressida’s character will not appear again in the fourth season of ‘Bridgerton’, after the Netflix series suggests that she move from the city of London to the countryside after falsely claiming to be Lady Whistledown and a “disgrace” to the family of.
In the book she continues to belong to high society, although she is now recognized as a liar and a widow after her husband dies.
Anthony and Kate are not traveling to India
Since the second season of the show, it has become clear how important her roots are to Kate, who is originally from India. Being pregnant in these new chapters, her husband Anthony suggests that she travel to this country to have the baby there, mirroring her absence in the last scene of “Bridgerton 3”.
This fact was an invention of the showrunners of the series, since in Julia Quinn’s story the Bridgertons do not separate and remain united, as we knew them from the beginning.
Francesca Bridgerton and Michaela Stirling
Although the final chapter shows Francesca married to John Stirling and meeting her cousin Michaela, leaving a possible LGBTQ+ relationship in the future, Seducing Mr. Bridgerton’ mentions none of this. In fact, her marriage and widowhood are explained in the sixth volume, “The Heart of a Bridgerton”, where it is mentioned that Francesca remarries to Michael Stirling, John’s cousin.
These differences have sparked debate among fans about the show’s fidelity to the source material, but have also maintained interest and excitement surrounding the television adaptations of “Brigerton.”
