Actor Theo James named global goodwill ambassador for UN refugee agency

The United Nations refugee agency on Monday named British actor Theo James as a global goodwill ambassador.

James, who has starred in television series such as “Crime Tycoons” and “The White Lotus”, has supported the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) since 2016 and has traveled to Greece, France and Jordan to meet refugees , according to the agency.

James said his family’s experience “gave him an understanding of the sacrifices and difficulties refugees face.”

“During World War II, my grandfather was forced to flee from Greece to Syria on a small boat, and his courage and resilience inspired me to help make a difference in the lives of displaced people,” he said in a statement. Note.

“My grandfather was welcomed and protected by the Syrian people, which allowed him to rebuild his life as a doctor and give back his contribution. This is why it is important for me to stand in solidarity with refugees fleeing today’s conflicts and help them to share their stories. They need our support now more than ever.”

The UNHCR said last week that the number of forcibly displaced people reached a record 117.3 million at the end of last year and that number could rise without changes in global policies.

“No one chooses to become a refugee. But we all have a choice in how we respond to people who need refuge, whose lives depend on it,” James said.
