This Wednesday, the PT panel of the Chamber of Deputies presented a popular appeal to the Federal Court of Brasilia to ensure that the president of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto, does not promote demonstrations of a party nature and does not omit to comment on a possible candidacy while you are responsible for the the monetary authority.
“(…) We advocate for an injunction requiring the defendant to refrain from making party-political statements, or even to stop expressing any support for the candidacy or claiming to hold a political position, as long as the exercise of the office continues”, the authors specified in the appeal.
The action of the PT parliamentarians, led by the president of the party, also MP Gleisi Hoffmann, was proposed on the day in which the Monetary Police Committee (Copom) of the BC meets to decide whether to maintain or modify the interest rate of country base of 10.50%.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and his allies are pushing for a reduction in the Selic rate to improve the country’s economic conditions.
The action also comes after Lula stepped up his attacks against Campos Neto. The PT MP had declared the day before, in an interview with CBN radio, that the president of BC will work to harm the country, signaling that he will appoint a successor as head of the authority who is “serious, responsible and immune from temporary nervousness of the market”.
The lawyers cite, as the basis of the lawsuit’s requests, reports in which Campos Neto, appointed during the government of President Jair Bolsonaro and who will have a mandate until the end of the year, has signaled political support for a future candidacy for the presidency of the Republic of the current governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (republicans).
Another fact alleged in the lawsuit is that Campos Neto said he would agree to become finance minister if Tarcísio, who was infrastructure minister in Bolsonaro’s government, decided to enter the race for the Palácio do Planalto. The news, the provision notes, was not contested by the president of the BC.
Contacted by Reuters, the central bank did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
