“13 Feelings” is a new national LGBTQIA+ themed film that celebrates the passion of the “emotional”

From the same director as ‘Hoje Eu Quero Voltar Alone’, the work tells the dilemmas of a gay man over 30 common to anyone

Ten years after the launch of the birthday boy Today I want to go back alonedirector Daniel Ribeiro returns to the big screen with light 13 Feelings. This time the plot tells the love misadventures of João, a gay man in his thirties who is an incorrigible romantic. After 10 years of a monogamous relationship and being fired from a stable job, he finds himself facing a completely different dating landscape than the one he’s experienced over the past decade, when dating apps were a distant reality.

For the director, cinema-goers can expect a film that is representative of the entire LGBTQIA+ community, as, according to him, the film “deals well with our problems, conflicts, dilemmas and topics that we discuss”. Additionally, the director guarantees that viewers will “leave with fond hearts.”

After a decade since his first film, the director sees growth in the acceptance and representation of the LGBTQIA+ community in society. This, according to him, fills him with hope that setbacks will not be accepted easily. “13 Feelings comes to a more open society, also to see the stories and images of the film,” he says.

“Today everyone has a gay friend or knows someone who is part of the community. We don’t hide anymore. So when they watch the film, people will recognize themselves or that LGBTQIA+ acquaintance. It’s really nice,” he says.

For the actor Artur Volpi, who played the protagonist João, acting in the film was a privilege because, with this work, he can reconcile the profession he loves so much with the fight for the dignity and rights of the LGBTQIA+ population.

“This struggle has many fronts, one of them is art. I am very grateful to have contributed to this film and I hope that people recognize themselves on the screen. I also hope that the work helps everyone in the process of experiencing their own existence”, said, who played Marcelo, in the series Second callfrom GloboPlay.

The artist also stated that one of the differences of the film is that it does not centralize the issue of sexual diversity. According to him, being gay is another challenge among the many faced by the character.

“In this case, sexual orientation is not a problem, it does not appear as the protagonist of the story. On the contrary, it is a fact, it is available information, which is part of the characters’ reality.”

Thanks to this naturalness, Artur believes that the work can be a weapon against LGBTphobia. “I think that the universality of the themes, situations and emotions that the characters go through will contribute to the fight against homophobia. João has many other problems, such as a professional and relational crisis. Anyone has this, regardless of sexual orientation, which generates identification”, he underlines.
