In 1974, American viewers first met the Ingalls, a family of American pioneers who, after crossing the country, finally settled in Minnesota to start a new life. The rest of the story, we know.
Fifty years later, Little House on the Prairie continues to air in hundreds of countries and has resonated with several generations. In connection with this historic anniversary, a large part of the cast went to the Monte Carlo Television Festival to meet with fans and journalists.
AlloCiné had the opportunity to speak with Melissa Sue Anderson and Alison Arngrim, translators for Marie Ingalls and Nellie Oleson, respectively. Between two anecdotes, two women react to the possibility of a Little House on the Prairie remake/reboot.
‘It’s bugged me for years’: The day Little House on the Prairie actress had to lose weight for role
“I don’t know anyone who has his charisma”
And to this question, two actresses answer the same thing: they will not have the same flavor. “I think they already tried but it didn’t work” Melissa Sue Anderson explains. “And that doesn’t surprise me. Little House on the Prairie is truly a product of its time, the 70s.
Particularly moved when talking about the man who played his father Charles Ingalls for several seasons and who has since died, he continues: “The series would not be what it was Michael Landon. During this period, he managed to copy America and bring the series to Europe. He knew how far he could go. I don’t know anyone who has his charisma. It won’t work without it.”
Not a remake but a reboot?
Knowing studios’ appetite for reboots (same characters but different story) and remakes (same story and same characters), it might happen one day. And at this level, the Plague Interpreter has a small idea of Nellie in mind:
“For me, it should not be a reboot, but a series that tells about American pioneers, but from a different angle. You know what they say, “Lightning never strikes the same place twice.” I don’t think we’ll be able to recreate that streak, or even do it. But if any studio wants to try, I’m willing to play Mrs. Oleson!” (laughs).
