The arrival of a new Jordan Peele film has become a real event. But besides being that rare thing, a great summer film not linked to any IP address, born from an idea of its writer and director, his new film No is significant for the return of its protagonist. After changing the game with salt, Peele and Daniel Kaluuya have teamed up again for the director’s UFO thriller, with Kaluuya this time playing the role of breeder OJ, a man who plans to make history by capturing an alien visitor on camera. Considering the couple’s latest collaboration was a seismic cinematic milestone, the bar was set quite high.
In the new edition of EmpirePeele talked about his creative connection with Kaluuya, and when we pointed to a potential similar collaboration with Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro, that was a thought that crossed the director’s mind as well. “It’s a lot of fun,” he says, “but when I was in the middle [shooting] salt, that’s what I was telling you. I was like [makes serious eye contact], ‘You are my De Niro, friend. We are myself From Niro. At first it was clear that they would work together again. “I was like, ‘I need you in the future too, mate!’ You could tell what we had in him as an interpreter, right from the start. ”
The fact that salt it was Peele’s directorial debut, and that he was a stranger in the director’s chair; a guy who, at the time, was best known for being a comedian. Together, they made the leap into cinematic horror. “We have a connection,” Peele says. “The first major movie he starred in, and my directorial debut, was salt. And we joined together because we went through it together. At first it seems like two people trust each other, then in the end it all works out. So I was looking forward to continuing that relationship and exploring a whole new character with Daniel. “Will they really be the new Scorsese-De Niro? Can their latest work together live up to the groundbreaking Oscar-winning film? salt? here is the hope No it will be a big “yes”.
