England lead the group and Slovenia reach the round of 16 after a poor goalless draw

England finished top of Group C, and Slovenia reached the knockout stages of the European Championship for the first time after a lackluster 0-0 draw on Tuesday, sparking wild celebrations from their fans at Cologne Stadium .

England, who had already qualified for the last 16, finished the group stage with five points, but it was another desperately disappointing evening for Gareth Southgate’s side, who managed just two goals in three games.

While the final whistle sparked celebrations from the Slovenian team, many English fans left before the end and expressed their frustration by booing the players.

Slovenia defended very well and held on until the equalizer, which took them to three points, third place in the group, tied with second-placed Denmark, who were 0-0 against Serbia.

In addition to the points, the two teams also had the same goal difference, goals scored and cards. Denmark was ahead of Slovenia in the subsequent play-off criteria for having had a better season in the Eurocup qualifiers.

Despite 71% possession, England managed just three shots on target and, even if they progress as leaders, they will need drastic improvements to overcome their Euro 2020 season, when they lost to Italy in the final .
