CANAL+ is broadcasting this evening La Tresse, directed by Laetitia Colombani, adapted from her own bestseller, which was released in 2017 and has sold more than five million copies. The film travels across three continents and tells the story of the struggle of three women who do not know each other but do not know what is most intimate and unique about them.
In India, Smita is an untouchable who dreams of seeing her daughter escape her miserable condition and enter school. In Italy, Julia works in her father’s workshop. When he crashes, he discovers that the family business is in ruins. While in Canada, Sarah, a prominent lawyer, is about to be promoted to head of her firm when she learns that she is ill.

The birth of the project
The story of these three women, who belong to different cultures and contexts, was born in January 2015, on a day when the writer/filmmaker accompanied one of her closest friends to a wig shop: “She had just found out she had cancer and was starting chemotherapy. She opted for a natural Indian hair wig. Then I remembered a documentary I had seen on TV years ago showing how hair donated by pilgrims to an Indian temple was taken out of the country and used to make wigs.“
casting side
Laetitia Colombani absolutely wanted to film the book in three languages ββand in three countries. So he invited a casting director in each country, and Michael Laguens in France oversaw all three castings, which took place in parallel.
Difficult to shoot
Filming was delayed several times due to consecutive imprisonments. Laetitia Colombani and her team first went to India, then to Canada and Italy. In total, the production took six months.
