Toffoli defines Moraes as the ‘general censor of the Republic’ in possession of marijuana for personal use

The Minister used the word to integrate the motivation for his vote on decriminalization

Summary

In a vote on decriminalizing possession of marijuana for personal use, Dias Toffoli jokingly calls Alexandre de Moraes the “general censor of the Republic.”

The Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Dias Toffoli defined his colleague Alexandre de Moraes as the “general censor of the Republic”, during the session that dealt with the decriminalization of possession of marijuana for personal use last Tuesday, the 25th.

“I have already occupied a lot of the Court’s time, but since on average I tend to follow either the speaker or the dissent, on average I have some merit in this plenary to express myself. Our censor general of the Republic here doubts that”, joked Toffoli, in a tone ironic.

This week, STF ministers decided that people transporting marijuana for personal use should not be criminalized as drug traffickers. The score was 7 votes in favor and 4 against decriminalization. There is still a parameter missing for the quantities, which should be defined this Wednesday 26th.

Currently, the law provides lenient penalties for those convicted of drug possession, such as providing community service. The penalty for drug trafficking varies from five to 20 years in prison.
