Under the Seine: Without this legendary masterpiece, we would never have seen Netflix’s Shark Movie!

The circle is complete! While the shark movie Sous la Seine has been a hit on Netflix since its June 5 release, summer blockbuster director Xavier Gens has a revelation that’s as surprising as it is delicious.

Going back to the beginning of his passion for cinema for AlloCiné, the director cites Steven Spielberg’s Jaws. Xavier Gens has shared the defining influence of Steven Spielberg’s classic on his career. As a teenager, Xavier Gens discovered Jaws.

Fascinated by the way the film immediately struck fear and captivated the audience, he wondered about the techniques for creating such suspense. “Steven Spielberg’s work is insane“, confides Gens. When you discover this movie, especially as a teenager, it makes you question how they did it. This is the first film where I said to myself that I wanted to know how it was made. In trying to understand, this led to my passion for cinema.”

A film as a tribute

At Sous La Seine, Xavier Gens pays homage to what has inspired him while trying to stand out with his own vision. Unlike Jaws, who hid the shark to increase fear, Gens decides to show the creature in all its glory from the start.

I wanted to play on the charm that an animal can evoke“, he explains. Our shark is a mix of mako and great white. We have worked in detail so that each scar and each point on the skin tells a story.

This approach, which respects one of the greatest classics of cinema and which gets rid of it by moving the cursors very (very) far, highlights the bias of Xavier Gens, who decided to offer a visually spectacular film while dealing with environmental themes.
