Calmon: BYD King Arrives to Take on Toyota Corolla

Sedans of this size are declining due to the strong advancement of SUVs, but the BYD King arrives forcefully in the Brazilian market

The first plug-in hybrid in the mid-compact category, BYD King arrives on the market with a bang. Sedans of this size are in decline due to the strong advance of SUVs. The main competitor and current segment leader, the Toyota Corolla hybrid, is not pluggable.

The BYD King has a wheelbase of 2,718 mm, almost the same as the Japanese model (2,700 mm), but the difference in length is notable: 4,780 mm versus 4,630 mm. It is also wider (1,837 mm) and taller (1,495 mm), but still loses in trunk space: 450 L versus 470 L. Small difference, but disadvantageous because it eliminates the spare wheel and the Toyota Corolla does not.

The interior includes good quality materials and a 12.8-inch rotatable screen. which, in the end, makes no difference. It can mirror (wired) Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. To reduce the price, BYD has given up safety features like autonomous emergency braking and blind-spot warnings, among others, found in the Corolla.

The Chinese model combines a 1.5 L aspirated engine with 110 hp with an electric motor of 180 hp, 32.2 kgf m in the GL version and 197 hp, 33.1 kgf m in the GS. Combined power of 209 hp and 235 hp respectively. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 s and 7.3 s is significantly better than the Corolla. Autonomy of 80 km (Inmetro cycle) in electric mode and a total of 806 kilometers in the city and 720 kilometers on the highway.

The mall’s parking rating was very limited. It was found that the driving position and behavior in low-speed corners were very good. The price is also interesting: R$ 175,800 (GL) and R$ 187,800 (GS).
