‘Ms. Marvel’: the surprise of episode 5 sets the stage for the end of the season

We didn’t see this one coming.

Spoilers for ‘Ms Marvel’ episode 5 below.

The latest episode of ‘Ms. Marvel’ on Disney+ has been a hit (and no, we’re not going to stop throwing flowers at the series, it deserves them all). As well as being a stunning emotional roller coaster that explores generational healing in a way that would melt even the hardest of hearts, the fifth episode has left us a big surprise. One that changes the direction of the end of the season.

Episode five has surprised us all by killing off its main antagonist, Najma (Nimra Bucha). Najma took a 180 degree turn in her villainous status when she sacrificed herself to close the veil that was inadvertently opened during her duel with Kamala (Iman Vellani), and that could have destroyed the Earth. Her sacrifice was completely unexpected considering that she killed and sacrificed her relationship with her own son Kamran (Rish Shah) in pursuit of her to open that very veil and return home.

Kamala tried to persuade Najma to find a solution together. and reminds her of how much Kamran needs her, and how her actions robbed fellow underground Aisha (Kamala’s great-grandmother, played by Mehwish Hayat) of the chance to be with her family (by “her actions” we mean her murder).

Overcome with remorse, Najma absorbs the veil’s energy (or lets it absorb her; we honestly can’t tell) screaming Kamran’s name in the process as she dies. It’s that moment that changes the course of ‘Ms Marvel’.

Najma’s death seems to awaken something in Kamran, who can be seen manifesting a power similar to Kamala’s for the first time. Thanks to a previous conversation between Najma and Kamala we know that Kamran has never been able to activate his powers.. In episode three, Najma reveals that the bracelet Kamala wears helps her unlock Noor’s powers and hopes that one day it will do the same for Kamran.

Fast-forward to this last episode, and all of a sudden, Kamran can access his powers without wearing the bracelet, potentially making him stronger than Kamala. For now. He is also seen wearing them when the Department of Damage Control (DODC) finally locates him after seeking Bruno’s help.Kamala’s best friend. A quick learner, Kamran has already mastered his skills, perfectly prepared to pick up where his mother left off.

Kamran was born in this reality (not in the Noor dimension, like his mother), so it is unlikely that he will resume the exact same mission as his mother, that is, breaking the veil to find his way to his ancestral home. Nevertheless, it is quite possible that his death has provoked a desire for revenge.

Despite her abandoning him, Kamran insists that Najma will come back for him and insists on staying with Bruno (Matt Lintz) so his mother knows where to find him. When Bruno reminds him that she left him at the mercy of the DODC, Kamran responds by saying: “She wouldn’t leave me behind like some kind of orphan”.

His inability to accept this truth may perhaps make it difficult for Kamran to believe his mother’s sacrifice. Not when that meant leaving him behind or closing the veil he had worked so hard to open. If so, would set him up for a showdown with Kamala in the finale, who he could very well hold responsible for his death.. To be fair, it seems more likely that Kamala will kill her than that Najma will decide to give up her life’s mission and her own life to save others. As she showed, she was a pretty selfish human being.

Although ‘Ms. Marvel’ has moved away from the narrative of the comics, there are some elements that have carried over to the series and Kamran’s betrayal could be one of them.. In the comics, Kamran and Kamala almost have a love connection until he kidnaps her. Kamran tries to indoctrinate her into an evil organization run by a radical terrorist lineage of the Inhumans, whose mission is to eliminate all nonhumans from the earth. While a betrayal by Kamran may not translate directly from page to screen, the deceitful nature of him would work in this context.

Since we are one episode away from the end of ‘Ms. Marvel’, the introduction of another great villain seems very unlikely. The DODC has been breathing down Kamala’s neck from the get-go, but they haven’t established themselves as a threatening enough presence to properly place them in that position.

Kamran seems like a much more likely route and cheating is already built into the DNA of their relationship thanks to their history in the comics. We can’t confirm what the writers have in store for us, but the accumulation of events and tensions so far has made the road to the end a success. We trust ‘Ms. Marvel’.
