Italo Ferreira overtakes Dora and wins the Saquarema stage of the surfing world championship; watch videos


The title maintains the dominance of the Brazilian Storm at Praia de Itaúna, which has hosted the WSL competition since 2017

Brazilian party on the sands of Saquarema. In a very balanced dispute, Italo Ferreira defeated Yago Dora this Friday afternoon, in the eighth stop of the world surfing circuit. The surfer from Rio Grande do Norte scored 13.67 against Dora’s 10.60 and maintained the Brazilian dominance in Praia de Itaúna, which has been part of the circuit since 2017 and has had only Brazilian surfers as champions.

With the triumph, Italo reaches fourth place in the rankings and is in the list of the top 5 who qualify for the WSL Finals. The runner-up brings Yago Dora to sixth place. Eliminated in the quarterfinals, Gabriel Medina is eighth. The WSL Finals bring together the top five finishers in September, in California, to decide the world champion. The next stop of the season, which will be the last, is scheduled for August 20th to 29th in Fiji.

This was the second time in the history of the event that the decision was made by two Brazilian surfers. The other occasion occurred in the 2022 season, when Filipe Toledo got the better of Samuel Pupo. Since 2017, when the WSL included Saquarema as the Brazilian stage of the World Cup, no foreign surfer has won the championship in the men’s category.

Italo started Friday by beating Japan’s Connor O’Leary in the quarterfinals. In total he easily surpassed his opponent (10.03 to 5.90). The semi-final was much more competitive. The Brazilian scored 16.60 against the 14.27 of the American Griffin Colapinto.

Yago Dora beat the ranking leader John John Florence in the quarter-finals (16.00 to 11.27) and in the semi-final he beat the South African Jordy Smith, qualifying by decision in Saquarema.

In the women’s category, the Saquarema stage saw an all-American final. Caitlin Simmers prevailed in the decisive heat against compatriot Sawyer Lindbad and won the title. Tati Weston-Webb finished in the semifinals. In the confrontation with Lindbad you had to chase from the start. The rival opened the series with a 4.67 against the Brazilian’s 1.43. The American maintained her average points and finished at 8.94 against Tati’s 4.16.
