In 1998, the general public discovered a very young, 13-year-old actress who was already gifted with great talent. It was The Horse Whisperer, a pure melodrama directed by Robert Redford, who plays Tom Booker, a cowboy and Zen master from Montana.
Tom helps Grace – a revelation to Scarlett Johansson – a tomboyish teenager and her horse, Pilgrim, overcome the trauma of a horse riding accident that resulted in the amputation of part of her leg.
Based on the best-selling 1995 book by Nicholas Evans, the film is the first to feature Redford on both sides of the camera. It was also Scarlett Johansson’s first major role in a studio film. He was previously nominated for a Spirit Award for the independent film Manny & Lo in 1996.
Already impressive
On the American site, the film received a good rating with an average of 73% positive reviews Rotten tomatoes. The Hollywood Reporter called it “A vital and sophisticated historyand cited its leading trio — with Kristin Scott Thomas rounding out the cast as Grace’s hard-working mother — as its best assets.
“Johansson is the winner“, notes the review. She deserves our sympathy as a young girl whose future has taken a terrible turn.”
Richard LaGravanese, who co-wrote the screenplay (he also adapted it on Madison Road 1995), states that Johansson “brings a heartache to the role that seems to come from experience beyond his years.”
It’s true that Scarlett Johansson brings an impressive charm and authenticity to such a young actress. Long before Hollywood turned her into a sex symbol, a young woman demonstrated her ability to compose a character from A to Z.
His performance in The Man Who Whispered Horses is simply moving.
The Man Who Whispered Horses is currently available on Disney+.
