In this episode we could see the first moves of the Black and Green councils ahead of the war between Aegon II and Rhaenyra for the Iron Throne. For example, Daemon taking control of Harrenhal and Ser Criston Cole marching to gather those sworn to fight in the name of the current king. However, what caused the biggest shock was the final scene: the conversation between Alicent and Rhaenyra.
All of this comes as Rhaenyra appears confused about what to do now that Daemon is gone and her army of allies is not large enough to face her half-brother. It is then that Rhaenys and Lady Mysaria advise him to seek out Alicent to try to reason with her and end the war before a massacre begins.
Rhaenyra sneaks into King’s Landing in disguise to find Alicent, and in doing so, they have a serious conversation. First, Rhaenyra asks him about his father’s last words, almost as an indication that he is willing to abdicate his throne if he really wanted Aegon II to be king in order to stop the conflict from spilling innocent blood Alicent explains that Viserys I said, “Aegon is the prince he was promised,” and at that moment, Rhaenyra clarifies that she was actually referring to Aegon the Conqueror and his Song of Ice and Fire, not exactly his son.
Alicent tries to hide that she was wrong to put Aegon II on the throne and denies that her then-husband was referring to anyone else, out of mere pride. Furthermore, she rejects Rhaenyra’s suggestion that she not start a war, claiming that she cannot do anything because “her hands are tied”, that Ser Criston Cole is already moving to attack, and that his children would not agree to stop the conflict. .
This makes it clear that there is no turning back, which further worries Rhaenyra, who finds herself vulnerable despite having a large number of dragons to counterattack, as she shows a genuine interest in not fighting.

While many believed that Rhaenyra visited Alicent precisely to stop the war, the reality is that there is a deeper reason why she decided to put her life on the line. Chapter director Geeta Vasant Patel provided the answer.
She also added that Rhaenyra sought validation from her father Viserys I through Alicent, as she wanted to be sure that he loved her and that he never lied to her about being the heir to the throne.
Finally, he mentioned that there is a battle of egos between Alicent and Rhaenyra because in the past they both gave in in many areas in the face of strained family situations and now they can’t admit that their bad decisions would start the Dance of Dragons.
