A boxing referee was attacked by a fighter inside the ring, hit back and ended up running away. The unusual case occurred during a sporting event in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, during the fight between the country’s super welterweights Angel Cruz and Julio de Jesus.

According to a video shared on social media this Monday, 1, the fight was going well when, in the second round, Cruz landed a right cross on De Jesus, who knelt. The referee intervened and ended the fight.

Julio de Jesus recovered quickly from the knockdown and didn’t like the fight being stopped by the referee. Still close to the ropes, the boxer pushed the referee, disrespecting his authority in the ring, and even punched him, who was on his back at the time.

The chaotic situation continued until the referee chased Julio de Jesus and also hit him with a punch, but the blow did not connect, as a member of the athlete’s team managed to block the blow. The judge ran to the opposite side and escaped.

The penalty that will be applied to the fighter and the referee has not been announced. However, there is a possibility that the career of the 42-year-old De Jesus could be in jeopardy. Angel Cruz has obtained the eleventh victory of his career.
