In the 1990s, they were the kings of romantic comedy, and their association was a hit in Notting Hill. We are talking, of course, about Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant, who play a Hollywood star and a bookseller, respectively, who fall madly in love in this Roger Michell film.
On the occasion of the feature film’s launch on TMC yesterday, we invite you to play on the career of its female star, who excelled not only in novels, but also won an Oscar for Best Actress in 2001. did you know
Richard Curtis, romantic comedy specialist
Born in New Zealand in 1956, Richard Curtis began writing comics after leaving Oxford University in 1978. It was at the university that he met Rowan Atkinson (aka Mr. Bean), with whom he continued to work on television after graduation. For cinema, he wrote the screenplays for several important romantic comedies such as Four Weddings and a Funeral, Bridget Jones’s Diary and Love Actually, all starring Hugh Grant!
$15 million
During the dinner party, when Julia Roberts’ character reveals the salary she received for her latest film, it’s actually the actual fee the actress received for her role as Love at First Sight Anna Scott: $15 million. At the time, in the late 1990s, the actor was the highest-paid in the world and had hits such as the romantic comedies My Best Friend’s Wedding, Love at First Sight in Notting Hill and Just Married (or Almost).
Mike Newell makes the wrong choice
Four Weddings and a Funeral filmmaker Mike Newell was approached by Love at First Sight in Notting Hill but opted to shoot The Needlemen instead. The filmmaker later admitted that he had miscalculated his move from a commercial point of view without regretting the choice.
