In this second season of “House of the Dragon”, Helaena Targaryen is one of the characters who has suffered shockingly because she witnessed the death and beheading of her young son Jaehaerys at the hands of Blood and Cheese. Except she discovered her mother having sex with Sir Criston Cole that same night.
Why does Helaena say she forgives Alicent’s mother? (theories)
In chapter three, we see Helaena mourning what happened, though she mentions that she shouldn’t feel that way because people die all the time. However, Alicent states that she has the right to grieve her loss and that while she regrets what happened to Jaehaerys, she is more concerned about her and the traumatic experience of handing the child over to the assassins.
Helaena immediately says that she forgives her mother, but doesn’t explain why exactly, which has caused fans to theorize about it.
One of the most reported is that the young woman forgave Alicent, possibly because, because Ser Criston Cole was with her, he neglected his position and thus Blood and Cheese was able to carry out this terrible deed. Another idea is that this act referred to him forgiving her for putting his brother Aegon II on the throne, since that was what caused Jaehaerys’ death.
We also have to consider that Helaena is a person with prophetic visions and maybe this forgiveness has something to do with one of them. One possibility is that he saw the future and realized that his mother would make a bad decision that would doom everyone or commit some kind of betrayal, so he gave her forgiveness in advance.
On the other hand, fans do not rule out the possibility that this forgiveness is some kind of farewell for Helaena to her mother, as they claim that she saw her death and apologizes for how it will happen.
How does Helaena die in the book ‘Fire and Blood’?
Although in “House of the Dragon” we see Helaena in a somewhat sad way, the reality is that in the original literary work she begins to develop a serious trauma, which is perfectly described in the next paragraph of “Fire and Blood”.
Once Helaena is taken prisoner in King’s Landing after Rhaenyra’s arrival, she decides to kill herself by jumping from a window of the Red Keep, and while there may be several reasons for doing so, they are never clear. For now, the changes the show has made from the book are significant, giving the possibility that the young Targaryen could have a different fate in the story.
