If you thought you’d heard it all, Netflix is always here to prove you wrong. So again is The Man of a Thousand Children, a four-episode docu-series focusing on Jonathan Jacob Meijer, a Dutchman determined to become the world’s greatest ancestor. But this obsession is not in vain.
This man’s story tells of the experiences of the families who crossed his path to procreation. They all discover an individual who is seemingly charming but is far more disturbing than meets the eye. Normally, a sperm donor cannot have more than 25 children. This limit makes it possible to avoid the risk of consanguinity if people get together without knowing their relationship.
Jonathan Jacob Meijer, now 42, started donating sperm at age 25 and never stopped. If his motives are unclear, the man is considered a fraud who takes advantage of the families’ trust.
The man accuses Netflix of manipulation
The main man refused to do any interviews for the documentary series, but in the interview given BBC RadioAccording to him, the investigation is ongoing “mistakenly“: “MThey deliberately called him the man of a thousand children when it should have been “a sperm donor who loved impregnating families with 550 children.“
Jonathan Jacob Meijer claims to have done nothing wrong and points out that “Netflix did a great job with five families who weren’t satisfied with 225 helpNatalie Hill, the executive producer of the documentary series, says that this investigation is the result of four years of work and that she personally met with 45 to 50 different families.
A man was banned from donating sperm in the Netherlands in 2017 after counting 102 babies born in eleven clinics in the country. He continued donating to other countries until 2023, when a woman filed a complaint against him for the risk of incest cases.
In his statement he admits that he had between 550 and 600 children. However, the Court of Justice puts the number at 1,000 on several continents.
The Man With a Thousand Children is available on Netflix.
