The actress recalled tips she received after starring in ’12 Years a Slave’

After winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in 12 years of slavery (2013), Lupita Nyong’o received several pieces of advice.

A decade after winning the award, the actress recalled the moment in an interview with People. “It definitely put pressure on me,” she confessed. “It was my first movie, and I had achieved what was considered the greatest achievement as an actress. So I was like, ‘Okay, what happens now? I can’t fail.'”

Without revealing the author, Nyong’o stated that “doing something bigger” was the worst advice he received. “They said that after 12 years of slavery I should be the lead in a blockbuster,” he said. “It’s not about the size of the role, it’s about the quality of it, at least for me.”

Another perspective

A conversation with another experienced actress in the field Oscar, Emma Thompsoncaused Nyong’o feel better. “She said, ‘You have to live your life the way you think is best. You have to listen to your own intuition,'” he recalled.

“She was like, ‘You have to allow yourself to fail. ‘ That was great advice to hear at a time when everyone was like, ‘Seize the day, you have to find a lead role, and then you have to do this and that…’

In 2016, Nyong’o took to the stage at the theater and starred Eclipsedon Broadway. The role earned him a nomination for Tony. “I listened to my intuition,” he confessed. “I went back to the theater and did a play on Broadway, which really saved me from the imposter syndrome and the fear of failure.”
