The cat from “A Quiet Place: Day 1” stole the hearts of fans: his true story is very touching

‘A Quiet Place: Day 1’, one of the most anticipated movies of 2024, has hit theaters. The prequel, based on John Krasinski’s franchise, in addition to starring Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn, has a very special third protagonist: Frodo, a cat who from his first appearance caught the attention of viewers, winning their empathy and hearts.

This particular kitten’s story unfolds alongside Sam (Lupita Nyong’o), a woman with terminal cancer caught in the middle of an apocalyptic threat posed by deadly alien creatures called “angels of death.” These beasts, completely blind and oriented with super gifted hearing, devour everything they detect in their path.

In the plot, Frodo plays a key role in the struggle for the survival of the protagonists, who throughout the story walk the streets of New York with extreme caution in order not to be detected by these voracious beings. Frodo became not only the main characters’ secret weapon, but also the unlikely hero, a situation that the director of the prequel, Michael Sarnoski, was already aware of before its release.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the director revealed that he preferred to use real cats among the animal options he had, because the abilities of these felines were the ones that would best adapt to an environment as frightening as that of the film.

“To me it made perfect sense that it was a cat … they are predators, they know how to do it. They lurk and remain silent,” he said in the speech.

Although Frodo didn’t need doubles or the use of CGI (computer effects) for his scenes, because to the surprise of those on set he adapted very well to the complex demands of filming, he had a partner with whom he traded scenes. Sarnoski used two cats (Schnitzel and Niko) to bring him to life, and in his words, both “had a very special soul behind their eyes.”

The “secret” story of Frodo

Although in the film we see Frodo, from the beginning, facing this apocalyptic world, his tender story was originally developed in the mind of the creator of ‘A Quiet Place: Day 1’.

“(Frodo) came about naturally … he became the extension of a patient hospice who doesn’t necessarily want to survive the end of the world.”
“I always imagined that when Sam lived in the city, Frodo was a very intelligent stray cat and left him milk. Over time, Frodo became more than just a pet, he was the only thing she could take with her when she left town to go to the end-of-life care facility,” confessed the director of the feature film.

This cemented the idea that Frodo would be the protagonist’s ideal companion on this terrifying adventure.

“I think Frodo is a great complement to Sam, they both have that distant aura, but when you get to know them they’re really sweet and wonderful,” she added.

Although the ‘A Quiet Place: Day 1’ creator was very confident about Frodo, one who seemed not to be was Lupita Nyong’o, who faced a personal challenge when working with cats because she was afraid of them. However, the constant coexistence with Schnitzel and Niko allowed him to overcome his fear, to the point of adopting his own after filming, which he calls YoYo.

On the social networks of Schnitzel and Nico, the cats who give life to Frodo, you can see images of both kitties on set living with Lupita and Joseph. Fans have taken this space to express the concern they felt in scenes where Frodo was in obvious danger.

“The water scene scared me, I thought Frodo wasn’t going to make it”, “The whole movie I was worried about the cat”, “My eyes filled with tears every time the cat came back, but the ending was what really got me scared “Moved”, are some of the comments you can read on the Instagram account.

But what surprised curious fans the most was the realization that, in fact, the cats who played Frodo looked nothing like each other in real life, because while Schnitzel has spotted fur, Nico is completely white.

Faced with this surprise, the cat man clarified this mystery to his followers by posting a photo where you can see what Nico really looks like.

“Meet the real Nikos! It’s actually a white cat. It was made by a professional animal groomer, a semi-permanent vegetable dye was used, safe for animals.’

In another scene it was revealed that there was a third cat called ‘Frida’, but it looks nothing like what you imagine, the special effects experts recreated Frodo’s head, which according to some comments from netizens was used for the scene where the furry. goes into a bag.

As a result of their participation in ‘A Quiet Place: Day 1’, Schnitzel and Nico (Frodo) have gained a lot of followers and so far have more than 25 thousand followers.
