Crunchyroll Disables Comments Section to Maintain ‘Safe Environment’

Despite preventing the publication of comments, the platform has maintained the star rating system

Crunchyroll announced this Monday (7/8) that it has disabled the platform’s comments section. In a statement, the company says the decision was made to maintain a “safe and respectful environment” for its users.

“At Crunchyroll, we prioritize creating a safe and respectful community environment. To maintain that standard, we hide all user-generated content, including comments and reviews, across all of our platforms and experiences,” reads a note shared on the support page. Crunchyroll Support and Customer Service.

Despite the decision, the platform has retained the star rating system as an alternative to “contact”, and even encourages users to comment on the anime available in the catalog on streaming social networks.

Attacks and criticisms

Crunchyroll did not cite any specific events for the decision, which bars commentary across the platform, including episodes and news articles. However, some subscribers speculate that the reason could be the growing homophobic attacks on “Boys-Love” (BL) anime, which feature romances between men.

Social media users also point out that the measure was taken shortly after a wave of offensive comments regarding the anime “Twilight Out of Focus,” which was released earlier this month. Other accounts also mention the various criticisms of the translations of “My Deer Friend Nokotan,” which was allegedly generated by Artificial Intelligence (AI).

It is not yet clear whether the criticism directly influenced the decision.
