DC Comics Finally Fixes How Its Official Canon Works After 86 Years

The DC Universe can be quite difficult to follow for newcomers, and DC finally lends a helping hand by explaining how its canon works.

The DC Universe can be somewhat hostile to new readers, due to the fact that it has undergone several reboots, many of which have merely slipped into the grease of what was actually meant to update the creations for a new generation. These reboots leave fans confused as to what does or does not “stand up” in the current canon. To try to alleviate this problem, DC Comics has further defined its narrative rules through the monthly title Outsider86 years after the birth of these imaginary worlds.

Warning: spoilers for Outsiders #9!

Preview of Exterior #9the character Drummer, who “speaks” to the city, takes the party to the “Lost City of Canon,” represented by a giant gun. The hero tells the Forsworn that his universe follows “narrative” rules. Certain concepts, places, and people resonate repeatedly throughout creation.

Over the years, other DC titles have taken a similar metatextual approach to canon and continuity. In Grant Morrison’s famous Animal Man phase, the storyline took a psychedelic odyssey through forgotten corners of the DC Universe, where the hero encountered characters whose histories had been erased in events such as Crisis on Infinite Earths.

These heroes were relegated to “Limbo”, which was updated to the new version. An earlier edition of Outsider introduced a new version of Limbo where currently unused characters could go.

Exterior #9 It also revealed the existence of two cities: one built on order and legacy, and the other on innovation and chaos. These two cities represent sides in the ongoing canon/continuity debate. Some argue that classic characters have strayed from their creators’ original intentions, while others argue that these icons must change over time.
