One of the highlights of the 2024 edition of MUBI FESTthe award-winning film Strange Path will have its national premiere on the first day of the festival, which will be held from July 26 to 28, at the Cinemateca Brasileira. The director of the film, CearĂ¡ native Gustavo Parentewill be present at the screening on the 26th, at 7:30 pm, in the Grande Otelo room, to speak to the audience. The event is promoted by MUBIglobal distributor, streaming service and production company.

Strange Path is set in a very recent past, when a new reality was experienced with the lockdown that reached the entire planet. However, this context is worked on in this fiction with the purpose of understanding the fragility of the relationship between a son with artistic vocations and his father with severe values.

A young filmmaker visiting his hometown is surprised by the rapid spread of a pandemic and must find his father, whom he has not spoken to in over ten years. After their first meeting, strange things begin to happen.

Strange Pathone of the six feature films submitted to represent Brazil in the edition of Oscar 2024 in the category of Best International Film, had a successful trajectory in festivals around the world. Highlight for the presence in Tribeca Film Festivalin New York, where it won the main awards in the International Competition: Best Film, Best Actor for Carlos Francisco, Best Screenplay for Guto Parenteand Best Cinematography for Acacio sling. The film hits theaters on August 1st.

From the independent production company Tardo Filmes, with a team formed mostly by professionals from CearĂ¡, Strange Path was also shown at the festivals of San Sebastian (Spain), Rotterdam (Netherlands), FidMarseille (France), Bafici (Argentina), Munich (Germany), BFI London (England) and in Sao Paulo International Film Festivalbetween others.

About Guto Parente

Director, screenwriter and editor, Guto Parente (Fortaleza, 1983) graduated in cinema in the first class of the Audiovisual School of Fortaleza; was a member of the artist collective Alumbramento (2008-16) and has been a partner in the production company Tardo Filmes since 2012. He made seven short films – among them Flash Happy Society (2009) and They Say Dogs See Things (2012), shown at the Locarno Festival (Switzerland) – and nine feature films, such as Road to Ythaca (2010) and The monsters (2011), both competing in the BAFICI (Argentina) – The monstersreceived a special mention from the jury.

Also in his filmography, The Mysterious Death of Pearl (2014), Little Hell (2018) and The Cannibal Club (2018), the three released in Rotterdam Festival (Netherlands) and shown at several festivals around the world. His 10th feature film, Strange Pathwas released on Tribeca Film Festival 2023 (United States).
