The United Nations Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on Saturday called for the immediate release of a journalist arrested in Tripole two days ago, adding that all media professionals must be kept safe.
UNSMIL expressed concern over “the arbitrary arrest and detention of journalist Ahmed Sanussi on 11 July”.
Sanussi is the general director of the Internet channel Tabadul and host of “Flousna” (“Our Money”), a television program on the Tunisian television channel Wasat, according to his verified Facebook page.
Sanussi’s channel and program focus on economic and social issues.
“Obstructing the work of journalists fosters a climate of fear and undermines Libya’s path to democratic transition,” the mission said.
Oil-rich Libya was plunged into chaos with the toppling of longtime ruler Muammar Gaddafi in a NATO-backed uprising in 2011.
