The opening scene
People are relieved by the action of the neighboring police. For this scene, André Techiné was inspired by reality, the setting and the slogans, even if the director revisited and re-staged them. He says : “I wanted to photograph this sensitive, vulnerable part of the police in the opening. This hidden side has to do with the dysfunction of the profession, about which we end up talking relatively little.“
Who for the neighbors?
André Techiné thought of Hafsia Hertz and Nahuel Pérez Biscayart very early on for Neighbors and even wrote the screenplay for Gens d’à passant with these two actors in mind: “For a black block modus, lean and agile with a knack for swimming all over the place, Nowell struck me as physical. And then he took all the risks to get this badass character during the riots.“
