Vincent and Anna are expecting their first child. As the birth approaches, they are both invited to dinner with their grandfather, Vincent, and his husband Pierre. There they must also find Claude Gatignol, a childhood friend of the family who regularly shares their reunion.
The evening, as usual, promises to be a bit corrosive – the political sensibilities of each side are particularly mismatched – and Vincent is preparing to make it explosive. While waiting for his late wife, he decides to let the other guests guess the name of the future child.
Is he just in the mood for teasing and worthy of his famous clumsy sense of humor? Or is he seriously going to call his son that? The answer, in any case, will not necessarily appeal to a small group, and it begins with A.

difficult exercise
Adapting a successful play to film is often difficult and can even be dangerous. In order not to fall into a simple “filmed theater”, the alchemy between the actors should be flawless and their talent should literally pierce the screen.
Like Oscar with Louis de Funes or even Francis Weber’s Le Dîner de Cons, Le Prénom is one of those works that has succeeded remarkably well in its journey from stage to film.
Impossible to pick up!
Although this can often be a drawback when it comes to the big screen, its unity of place and time immediately creates a closeness and almost intimacy with the viewer. So much so that putting Pierre and Grandpa in a small living room with the characters is very difficult to leave, even when you already know the movie.
Serving up some very effective writing and, in particular, the gruesome question that continues to plague the protagonists and the public throughout the first part of the feature film (what should Vincent name his son?), The First Name excels above all else. The quality of his five actors. A special mention to Valérie Benguigui and Guillaume de Tonquedec, who were awarded the César for their excellent performances.
