The House of the Dragon timeline begins approximately 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Stormborn and the death of her father, the Mad King. He was the last Targaryen to sit on the Iron Throne before the start of Game of Thrones.

Thus, the series begins with the reign of King Viserys I, the fifth Targaryen king at the height of the family’s power, and the questions surrounding his succession and the events that unfold after he names his daughter, Rhaenyra, as heir.

The Roots of the Targaryen Family

The complete Targaryen family tree contains over 100 characters and spans 16 generations, but the most important thing is to understand how it all began.

As mentioned, it is the fifth Targaryen king, Viserys I, who sits on the throne at the beginning of House of the Dragon. He is the son of Baelon Targaryen and grandson of Jaehaerys I, known as “The Conciliator”, and is a descendant of Aegon I, “The Conqueror” – who took control of Westeros and started the royal Targaryen dynasty generations earlier.

Viserys’s reign, however, is bedeviled by succession. His first marriage, to Aemma Arryn, produced only one surviving heir, Rhaenyra. Viserys intended for his daughter to take the throne, but her second marriage complicated matters.

With his new wife, Alicent Hightower, Viserys fathered three sons and a daughter, and his eldest son, Aegon, was eventually crowned king after his death. Thus, the Targaryen family tree branches out from this complicated family.
