The sequel to Gladiator will hit theaters this November, more than two decades after the success of the original film, which hit the big screen in 2000. Directed again by Ridley Scott, the story set in ancient Rome brings together historical figures.
In the original film, which starred Russell Crowe as Maximus, the main historical characters were Marcus Aurelius, the Roman emperor, his son Commodus and his daughter Lucilla, who will also appear in the new film.
The protagonist, played by Crowe, was completely fictional. His character, Maximus, was based primarily on Roman generals, as well as the gladiators themselves and the lives they led.
When it comes to the 2024 sequel, the film’s protagonist, Lucius Verus II, played by Paul Mescal, actually existed. But his story was very different from the one we’ll see in the movie.
As the film will show, he was the son of Empress Lucilla Augusta, but died as a child, and thus did not become a gladiator.
Other real characters are Geta and Caracalla, who share the role of Emperor of Rome. Joseph Quinn will play Geta, while Fred Hechinger will play Caracalla in the film. They are the two sons of Septimius Severus, who wanted to divide his power between the two.

Gladiator will premiere in Brazilian theaters on November 14, 2024. The cast will include Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Barry Keoghan, Denzel Washington, Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger.
