Thirty-five years after its release, the film Honey, I Shrunk the Kids continues to inspire generations since 1989. More than a light and fun comedy, the film invites us on a journey of adventures and reflections on the values of friendship and family.

Rick Moranis (Wayne Szalinski)

Leading the cast, Rick Moranis plays inventor Wayne Szalinski.
Moranis, who was a comedy icon in the 80s with films like Ghostbusters It is Spaceballsreturned to ‘Honey, I stretched the baby‘ in 1992 and Honey, I Shrunk Ourselves! in 1997. Throughout the 90s he starred in other hits including The Flintstoneswhere he played a live-action Barney Rubble. He took a break from acting for personal reasons in the early 2000s, but in 2020, Moranis made a rare TV appearance in an advertisement for Ryan Reynolds’ cellphone company, Mint Mobile.
After fans questioned his absence in Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021), the actor was also left out of Ghostbusters: Ice Apocalypse (2024).
Matt Frewer (Russell “Big Russ” Thompson Sr.)

Actor Matt Frewer, better known previously as Max Headrooma pop culture figure from the 1980s, plays Wayne’s rude neighbor Russell “Big Russ” Thompson Sr., a man whose children are also shrunken by the invention. Matt Frewer’s career after success Honey, I Shrunk the Kids continued with characters of great personalities. The actor participated in the film Watchmen (2009), voiced Panic in Hercules (1999) and played Frank in the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead. In addition, he had extended stints as Dr. Aldous Leekle in Orphan Black (2013 – 2017) and as Logan in Fear the Walking Dead (2019).
Marcia Strassman (Diane Szalinski)

Balancing Wayne’s crazy antics, Marcia Strassman plays Diane Szalinski, his wife, who helps rescue the shrunken children. Unlike Moranis, who has appeared in all the films in the franchise Honey, I Shrunk the Kids Strassman only returned for the first sequel, Honey, I stretched the baby (1992).
She continued to work frequently throughout the 1990s and 2000s on TV shows, and played Martine in Noah Knows Best and Nancy Sterngood in the spinoff series Tremors. Marcia Strassman passed away in 2014 at the age of 66.
Kristine Sutherland (Mae Thompson)

In the cast, Kristine Sutherland plays Mae Thompson, Big Russ’s wife, who is concerned about her children. Sutherland’s acting career spans several decades, and she worked on this film while also working as a portrait photographer. Thomas Wilson Brown plays Russell “Little Russ” Thompson Jr., Big Russ’s eldest son who struggles to escape his overbearing father and is shrunk by Wayne’s ray. Shortly after appearing as part of the cast of Honey, I Shrunk the KidsBrown played Gerald in the film Welcome Home Roxy Carmichael 1990. He continued to work sporadically throughout the 1990s, including a recurring role as Keith on Days of Our Lives (1994). In 2020, Brown appeared as himself in the Disney Plus behind-the-scenes series Prop Culture. Now, he is also a writer, director, and producer.
Jared Rushton (Ronald “Ron” Thompson)

Jared Rushton, who was fresh off the success of playing the best friend of Tom Hanks in I want to be big (1988), he plays Ronald “Ron” Thompson, Big Russ’s youngest son who hits a baseball through the Szalinski’s window, which causes the children to be shrunk. Rushton continued to play teenage roles in the early 1990s and appeared as Clyde Parker in Cursed Cemetery 2 (1992). Rushton played roles on shows throughout the 1990s before moving away from acting to become a rock musician.
Amy O’Neill (Amy Szalinski)

Among the children shrunk by their father’s invention, Wayne’s daughter Amy Szalinski is played by Amy O’Neill. She, who reprised her role as Amy in Honey, I Stretched the Baby. Additionally, the actress starred as Pandra in White Wolves: A Cry in the Wild II (1992) and played minor roles before moving away from acting in the mid-1990s to become a performance artist. O’Neill rejoined her former castmates from ‘Honey, I Shrunk the Kids in a 2020 episode of Prop Culture discussing the film.
Robert Oliveri (Nick Szalinski)

The youngest member of the cast, Robert Oliveri plays Nick Szalinski, the middle child of the family, who shares his father’s love of science and invention. Oliveri’s short filmography includes the film’s sequel, where he reprised the role of Nick, but his most famous role came as Kevin in the Tim Burton Edward Scissor Hands (1990). He now resides with his family in Florida.
